Improved maps of surface water bodies, large dams, reservoirs, and lakes in China

Abstract. Data and knowledge of surface water bodies (SWB), including large lakes reservoirs (surface areas > 1 km2), are critical for the management sustainability resources. However, existing global or national dam datasets have georeferenced coordinate offsets many reservoirs, some not reported separately. In this study, we generated China's bodies, Large Dams, Reservoirs, Lakes (China-LDRL) dataset by analyzing all available Landsat imagery in 2019 (19 338 images) Google Earth Engine very-high spatial resolution Pro. There were ? 3.52 × 106 yearlong SWB polygons China 2019, only 0.01 them (0.43 %) size (> km2). The these accounted 83.54 % total 214.92 103 km2 area (SWA) China. We identified 2418 dams, 624 off-stream dams 1794 on-stream 2194 (16.35 3051 (73.38 general, most distributed South China, East Northeast whereas located West lower Yangtze River basin, provision reliable, accurate China-LDRL on reservoirs/dams will enhance our understanding resources security is publicly at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.16964656.v3 (Wang et al., 2021b).
